Recovering from Surgery

🙏 Many people have kindly asked how my surgery and recovery is going. Here’s a short update.

❤️‍🩹 The surgery went very well on Friday - the uninvited intruder has been kicked out - and the first 4 days of recovery have progressed as well as can be expected.

🏥 I am being kind to myself. I have put my complete trust in the hands of the wonderful surgeons, doctors and nurses at the Royal Free Hospital - they have been world class. 🙏

😅 Day 1 (Friday Euphoria): complete relief and euphoria at getting through surgery successfully. I can’t tell you how lovely it was to see my wife & son in the evening after surgery, aided by some strong drugs. When I woke from surgery, in my mind, I was delivering a leadership training course 😂 I must love what I do.

❤️‍🩹 Day 2 (Groggy Saturday ): Start of Recovery - heavily sedated with pain relief drugs and in intensive observation and care. The personalised nursing was remarkable. 90 minutes sat in a chair feeling dizzy and sick. Don’t remember much but Ange & Rocco visited again to hold my hand and give me energy.

😫Day 3 (Sunday Pains): the reality of having such major abdominal surgery kicked in. It hurts. You don’t really sleep. I’ve never had so many tubes, pipes and drugs put into me. It’s all part of the process of getting better. 180 mins sitting in a chair felt ok. My parents, brother & Ange cheered me on.

🩺Day 4 (Monday Mobility): I had quite a few of my tubes and pipes removed. This meant I could start walking . I managed a short wobbly walk assisted by the physio and also started drinking fluids. Ange visited followed by her parents to check in.

🚶‍♂️Day 5 (Tuesday Freedom): I was allowed to walk around the ward. Several times. Felt good to have catheter removed and only now have 2 tubes for drainage attached. Thankfully I was able to start eating soft solids - how good was that! Rocco was amazed at how well I was progressing when I saw him and Ange.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Today I’m particularly looking forward to seeing my daughter and making more progressive steps. My daughter has waited till I look more normal, and less like a human cyborg, before seeing me. Can’t wait to hug her.

❤️‍🩹 Of course I’m not taking anything for granted. There are ups and downs every day, and I’m far from making a full recovery. But thankfully I am making good progress and hope to get home in the coming week/days when the time is right.

😇 One final thought. Throughout I’ve had my “Guardian Angel” with me. She has come to see me every day. She has kept our family logistics ticking along calmly in the background. She has managed my hospital visitors. Most importantly she has shown unbelievable love, kindness & care. ❤️ My rock, my wife Ange 🙏

😰 If you are facing trauma right now. I see you. You will get through it. Take it step by step and trust the process.

💪 You’ve got it. 💪
