Show not Tell

🤔 How often do you fall into the trap of telling people what to do?
💯 We’ve all been on the receiving end of someone telling us what to do. It’s often met with resistance, disengagement, or hesitation. But when we’re shown - when we experience something first hand, uncover insights ourselves, or are guided through discovery - we learn, adapt, and grow.

Here’s how this principle plays out in areas I work on with clients:
🚀 Leadership: Show your team by modelling behaviours, delegating decisions, and guiding rather than directing. When leaders empower people to push their boundaries, they don’t just follow - they grow and evolve.
💡 Coaching: Show through active listening and thoughtful questioning. Rather than telling someone how to proceed, help them explore their own path. Ownership leads to lasting change.
🎯 Sales: Show value by engaging with customers, asking the right questions, and uncovering explicit needs. Pushing solutions before understanding creates resistance; curiosity builds trust.
📖 Communication & Storytelling: The best stories show, enticing the mind to explore, igniting imagination, and leaving space for interpretation. Over-explaining dilutes impact.
🎓 Training: Show through interactive activities that allow participants to embed their learnings from theory. Avoid overwhelming with excessive content - engagement leads to retention.
🛑 So the next time you’re tempted to "tell", pause and ask yourself: "How can I show instead?"
